Course Details, Exam and Registration

The Interpretive Guides Association Professional Interpreter’s Course is typically offered twice per year – once in the Spring (May) and once in the Fall (November).

Course content

The following topics are covered in lecture and workshop/ field trip format: 1) Geology & Ecology of the Rocky Mountains 2) Park Management and Local Issues 3) Ecological & Commemorative Integrity 4) History and Climate Change 5) Fundamentals of Interpretation

Exams need to be taken separately from the course and scheduled in May, June, November, December and January. Individuals wishing to take these exams outside our regular exam schedule must contact Special exam dates may be arranged based on evaluator and proctor availability and are subject to an additional fee of $50 plus gst. July, August and September dates are rarely available.

If you want to become accredited at the professional level please read through and complete the application. We require all details to be sent in as early as possible so we can make arrangements for the exam dates 

Course Cost: $499 plus GST

Individuals who are fully accredited at the PI level and are interested in refreshing their knowledge may be able to sit through sections of the course a second time for a discounted rate when space is available. Contact our office for details.

If you took the course but did not complete the required tests within 2 years you will have to redo the entire course and pay the full course fees to do so.

A minimum of 6 participants are required to run this course and this number must be reached 3 weeks prior to the course start date. At this point, a decision will be made whether to run the course or not. As a result, no refunds will be given after this point.

Prior to the three-week point, full refunds will be given to individuals who wish to cancel minus a $30 administration fee.

If the Interpretive Guides Association has to cancel a course due to low numbers, you will have the choice of being given a full refund or transferring your registration for another course.

Location: Canmore and Banff (classroom sessions in Canmore, field trips components conducted in Banff National Park) - Classroom sessions at the IGA office, 203-820 Main St, Canmore

Cost: $489 plus GST

Day 1: 9:00 am - 5:30 pm - Fundamentals of Interpretation

Day 2: 9:00 am - 1:00 pm - Geology and Geography of the Canadian Rockies 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm - Geology Field Trip

Day 3: 9:00 am - 1:00 pm - Ecology of the Mountains 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm - Ecology Field Trip

Day 4: 9 am – 5:00 pm - Park Management, Ecological & Cultural Integrity Classroom and Field Trip Sessions

Day 5: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm - History in the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage Site 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm - Fundamentals of Interpretation

Day 6: 9:00 am – 1:30 pm - Fundamentals of Interpretation Final oral program practice and perfection techniques.

This course will be taught in French and is designed for those individuals who have experience working as guides in the Canadian Rockies. It goes much deeper into the material than the Apprentice Course. Please note: this is only a course; in order to become accredited as a professional interpreter you must apply to take the oral and written exams. Exams each cost an additional $65 plus GST and will be set up after the course based on the request. Please email if you are interested in taking these two exams. All individuals wishing to take these two tests and become accredited must fill in the PI application package and submit it to the email address above with all documentation showing you have the hours of work and/or education required to become accredited at this level. Professional Oral Exam (all languages and locations)

Date: Spring Season: April - June 30.

You can submit your oral exam video after you have taken the PI course and have received feedback from the IGA's Executive Director, on your oral exam outline.

Cost: $65 plus gst

Those individuals who have taken the IGA's Professional Interpreter course and have sent in their PI application package showing they have enough hours of experience and expertise are permitted to take this test.
All individuals taking this test must be a valid member of the IGA in good standing.
In order to become accredited at the PI level you must complete and pass both the written and oral exams with a minimum of 70%.
All oral exams are submitted by video (You Tube or Vimeo).
