Course Details, Exam and Registration

The Interpretive Guides Association Professional Interpreter’s Course is typically offered twice per year – once in the Spring (May) and once in the Fall (November).

Course content

The following topics are covered in lecture and workshop/ field trip format: 1) Geology & Ecology of the Rocky Mountains 2) Park Management and Local Issues 3) Ecological & Commemorative Integrity 4) History and Climate Change 5) Fundamentals of Interpretation

Exams need to be taken separately from the course and scheduled in May, June, November, December and January. Individuals wishing to take these exams outside our regular exam schedule must contact

Exams are now complete for our Spring 2018 season. Special exam dates might be able to be arranged based on evaluator and proctor availability and are subject to an additional fee of $50 plus gst. July, August and September dates are rarely available.

If you want to become accredited at the professional level please read through and complete the application. We require all details to be sent in as early as possible so we can make arrangements for the exam dates

Course Cost: $499 plus GST

Individuals who are fully accredited at the PI level and are interested in refreshing their knowledge may be able to sit through sections of the course a second time for a discounted rate when space is available. Contact our office for details.

If you took the course but did not complete the required tests within 2 years you will have to redo the entire course and pay the full course fees to do so.

A minimum of 6 participants are required to run this course and this number must be reached 3 weeks prior to the course start date. At this point, a decision will be made whether to run the course or not. As a result, no refunds will be given after this point.

Prior to the three-week point, full refunds will be given to individuals who wish to cancel minus a $30 administration fee.

If the Interpretive Guides Association has to cancel a course due to low numbers, you will have the choice of being given a full refund or transferring your registration for another course.

Dates: November 20-25, 2018

Canmore Field trips could take place in Banff National Park and you will need a PC park pass!!

Course Cost: $499 plus GST

Day 1: 9:00 am - 5:30 pm -Interpretation

Day 2: 9:00 pm - 5:00 pm -Parks Management classroom session and field trip. This day will be spent in Banff. Meet at Cave and Basin.

Day 3: 9:00 am - 1:00 pm - Interpretation 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm - History and Climate Change

Day 4 - 9 am - 6 pm - Geology and Ecology

Day 5 - 9:00 - 5:00 - Geology and Ecology Field Trip - Different Areas of Banff (a valid parks pass will be required!)

Day 6 - 9:00 pm - 1:30 pm Interpretation

Please read all sections of the IGA manual. If you do not have one you can purchase it for $45 plus GST.

This course is designed for those individuals who have experience working as guides in the Canadian Rockies. It goes much deeper into the material than the Apprentice Course.

Please note: this is only a course; in order to become accredited as a professional interpreter take the oral and written exams. In order to take both exams you must qualify with enough hours of experience and expertise. You will be emailed a copy of the PI application package when you register and pay for this course. Please read through it to find out if you qualify take the exams. Exams will take place in December, January, Feb, May, June and September each year. Exams each cost an additional $65 plus GST. Please email with your completed application package if you are interested in taking these two exams and make sure to book an exam date at that time.
