Course Details and Registration

The following is an overview of some of the material covered in these courses.

Classroom Instruction will include:

  •  legal responsibilities of the guide
  •  trip planning
  •  risk management
  •  group management skills.

Outdoor component – Instructional Hike:

We will spend time on a local, recognized trail where the course instructor will demonstrate and give instruction to reinforce the skills covered in the morning. We will also look at on trail group management skills and best practices for day hiking guides in summer, winter and both (depending on the course you are taking and/or season you are taking it in). You will also be assessed and evaluated on your ability to safely lead a group on a recognized trail during the outdoor component.

Note: All students taking this course must send a copy of a valid first aid certificate (minimum standard first aid for the summer GM course and minimum Wilderness (40 hour) first aid for winter course) and a hiking resume to courses@interpretiveguides.org as soon as they register to hold their space in this course. This course is limited to 10 participants per instructor so don’t miss out and have someone else take your spot!

***If you are not comfortable with a map and compass please refer to the links in the pre-course package and prepare yourself before the course, or, take our map and compass course. Map and compass skills are not taught during this course but will be assessed!

2-day Summer Course Cost: $250.00 plus GST.

***Please be aware that all individuals who take this course must have a membership with the IGA or need to pay their yearly member dues in order to be in good standing with this accreditation. If you are taking this back to back with the apprentice interpreter course your member fees are included with that courses fees.

Cancellation & Refund Policy Please read our Cancellation & Refund Policy if you are planning to sign up for this course. If you cancel three weeks before the course starting date, you will receive a full refund minus a $30 administration fee. If you cancel two weeks before the course starting date, you will receive a 50 percent refund minus a $30 administration fee. If you cancel with less than 2 weeks notice no refund will be issued.

If the Interpretive Guides Association has to cancel a course due to low numbers, you will have the choice of being given a full refund or transferring your registration for another course.

Winter Group Management November 2018

Our Winter Group Management Course will train you to understand the requirements to guide and manage a group in winter conditions. By passing this course you will be certified to guide groups in snowy conditions throughout this region.

Dates: November 17 - 19, 2018

Cost: $375 plus GST

Times: 8:30 - 5:30 daily

**** PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWIGN COURSE DETAILS: There is homework to complete before this course. We are presently working on the materials for this new winter course and plan to send it to you at least two weeks before the course starts.


Course pre-requisites: 1. Valid first aid certificate (Minimum Wilderness First aid (40 hour) ) and 2. Hiking resume. Details for the hiking resume can be found in the GM pre-course package.
