Course Details and Registration

The following is an overview of the content covered in our group management course for interpretive guides:

Day One

Morning:  Classroom Instruction

  •  legal responsibilities of the guide
  •  trip planning
  •  risk management
  •  group management skills.

Afternoon: Instructional Hike

We will spend the afternoon on a local, recognized trail where the course instructor will demonstrate and give instruction to reinforce the skills covered in the morning. We will also look at on trail group management skills and best practices for day hiking guides. This day is a chance for the Instructor to assess, through questioning.

Day Two – Full day hike, Student Assessment & Evaluation

Course participants will be expected to lead the group for a minimum of 30 minutes (total time will depend on group size). The focus on this day is assessment and evaluation, but instructors will also take advantage of opportunities to teach additional skills. More details on assessment and evaluation will be emailed to you prior to taking the course.

Note: All students taking this course must meet the course prerequisites, send in a copy of a valid standard first aid certificate and a hiking resume as soon as you register to info@interpretiveguides.org

***If you are not comfortable with a map and compass please refer to the links in the pre-course package and prepare yourself before the course, or, take our map and compass course. Map and compass skills are not taught during this course but will be assessed!

Pre-course materials will be emailed to you as soon as you register. If you do not receive those materials within a couple days please email courses@interpretiveguides.org.

Course Cost: $235.00 plus GST. Please see the individual course registration links for details.

Individuals who take this course can also become certified as a field leader with the Outdoor Council of Canada (OCC).

In order to get this extra certifiation you just need to pay the OCC membership fee, complete some extra homework and pass the OCC test. Please visit the Group Management courses and registration page to add this certification.

***Please be aware that all individuals who take this course must have a membership with the IGA or need to pay their yearly member dues in order to be in good standing with this accreditation. If you are taking this back to back with the apprentice interpreter course your member fees are included with that courses fees.

Cancellation & Refund Policy Please read our Cancellation & Refund Policy if you are planning to sign up for this course. If you cancel three weeks before the course starting date, you will receive a full refund minus a $30 administration fee. If you cancel two weeks before the course starting date, you will receive a 50 percent refund minus a $30 administration fee. If you cancel with less than 2 weeks notice no refund will be issued.

If the Interpretive Guides Association has to cancel a course due to low numbers, you will have the choice of being given a full refund or transferring your registration for another course.

Map and Compass 101 May 10, 2017
MAP AND COMPASS 101

Time: 5:30 pm - 9:30 pm
Location: IGA office - unit 203-820 Main St, Canmore.

div>If you are taking the group management course or have in the past and you are not feeling 100% comfortable finding your position on a map and/or with the use of your compass you should take this course! This half day map and compass course is designed to introduce people to the skills of map reading and basic compass work. It offers the perfect pre - requisite standard for the IGA group management course, where further field skills will be practised from the ground work applied during this course.

Equipment Required for Classroom Portion

Compass

Protractor ( regular plastic school type with degrees on it)

A 1:50,000 map of Canmore. (gem trek do a good map).

Notebook and pen.

Your instructor will be Dave Holder who is one of the instructors for our Group Management course. He has a considerable background in map reading instruction. His skills mainly derive from when he taught map reading and compass work to the British Army for 18 years all over the world. He also qualified as an Orienteering Coach and Instructor with the British Orienteering Federation. Dave competed in the sport of Orienteering for many years winning several military championships in Europe. Dave is an ACMG Hiking and Snowshoe guide a Master Interpreter with the IGA, and also an instructor with the Outdoor Council of Canada.
