Course Details and Registration

The following is an overview of the content covered in our group management course for interpretive guides:

Day One

Morning:  Classroom Instruction

  •  legal responsibilities of the guide
  •  trip planning
  •  risk management
  •  group management skills.

Afternoon: Instructional Hike

We will spend the afternoon on a local, recognized trail where the course instructor will demonstrate and give instruction to reinforce the skills covered in the morning. We will also look at on trail group management skills and best practices for day hiking guides. This day is a chance for the Instructor to assess, through questioning.

Day Two – Full day hike, Student Assessment & Evaluation

Course participants will be expected to lead the group for a minimum of 30 minutes (total time will depend on group size). The focus on this day is assessment and evaluation, but instructors will also take advantage of opportunities to teach additional skills. More details on assessment and evaluation will be emailed to you prior to taking the course.

Note: All students taking this course must meet the course prerequisites, send in a copy of a valid standard first aid certificate and a hiking resume as soon as you register to info@interpretiveguides.org

***If you are not comfortable with a map and compass please refer to the links in the pre-course package and prepare yourself before the course, or, take our map and compass course. Map and compass skills are not taught during this course but will be assessed!

Pre-course materials will be emailed to you as soon as you register. If you do not receive those materials within a couple days please email courses@interpretiveguides.org.

Course Cost: $235.00 plus GST. Please see the individual course registration links for details.

Individuals who take this course can also become certified as a field leader with the Outdoor Council of Canada (OCC).

In order to get this extra certifiation you just need to pay the OCC membership fee, complete some extra homework and pass the OCC test. Please visit the Group Management courses and registration page to add this certification.

***Please be aware that all individuals who take this course must have a membership with the IGA or need to pay their yearly member dues in order to be in good standing with this accreditation. If you are taking this back to back with the apprentice interpreter course your member fees are included with that courses fees.

Cancellation & Refund Policy Please read our Cancellation & Refund Policy if you are planning to sign up for this course. If you cancel three weeks before the course starting date, you will receive a full refund minus a $30 administration fee. If you cancel two weeks before the course starting date, you will receive a 50 percent refund minus a $30 administration fee. If you cancel with less than 2 weeks notice no refund will be issued.

If the Interpretive Guides Association has to cancel a course due to low numbers, you will have the choice of being given a full refund or transferring your registration for another course.

Japanese Group Management Course

Dates: June 5/6, 2017

Times: 8 - 5 daily

Location: Banff TBA (Day 1 will be spent indoors in the morning and then outside in the afternoon, all day 2 is spent outside)

Cost: $235.00

Pre-requisites:

  • All participants must come prepared for all types of weather in the mountains.

  • All participants must have a valid first aid certificate (minimum standard first aid) and show they have completed at least 5 local hikes in a hiking resume format). 1st aid and hiking resume to be sent into courses@interpretiveguides.org prior to day 1 of the course. People who do not send in these two documents will not be able to be accredited as a hiking guide.

  • Participants must know how to use a map and a compass.

French Group Management Course - June 18/19, 2017

Dates: June 18/19, 2017

Cost: $235 plus GST

Times: 8:30 - 5:00 daily

Location: IGA office - 203-820 Main St, Canmore

You must have a valid first aid certificate (at least standard 16-hour) and a hiking resume. Details can be found in the GM pre-course package that will be sent to you once you have paid your course fees.
Hiking resumes and 1st aid certificates must be sent into Jennifer Mannsberger at courses@interpretiveguides.org prior to day one of the course.

Location: Mystic Springs Chalet - 140 Kananaskis Way, Canmore (1st half of day 1 is inside and then the rest of the course will be held outside on a local trail, come prepared for all weather)

You must have a valid first aid certificate (at least standard 16-hour) and a hiking resume. Details can be found in the GM pre-course package that will be sent to you once you have paid your course fees.

Outdoor Council of Canada (OCC) Certification

Outdoor Council of Canada (OCC) Certificate

This is an add on certification for those taking our Group Management course.

By paying this fee, completing the homework and passing the test you can complete the Group Management course with two certifications. You will become a certified OCC Field Leader and a hiking guide with the Interpretive Guides Association.
