Apprentice Interpreter Course Content

Day 1 Natural History We will cover: -The basics of Canadian Rockies Geology (sedimentation, mountain building, erosion, rock types) – An introduction to glaciers and mountain weather – An introduction to mountain ecosystems (Typical mountain habitats, species interactions and ecosystem connections)

History and Park Management We will cover: – Eras of human presence from aboriginal to park creation – Evolution of concept of park- from playground to goal of ecological integrity – Current park management issues & initiatives

Day 2 Introduction to Interpretation We will cover: – An overview of interpretation and how interpretation is different from information – The basics of effective communication – How to build a thematic interpretive program

Course Cost: $335 plus gst

The course fee includes; IGA digital manual (this will be emailed to you once you have paid your fees) and a membership with the association good for one full year from the date of purchase.

Test Re-Take fee:  $65 for full retake or $30 per section

Cancellation & Refund Policy Please read our Cancellation & Refund Policy if you are planning to sign up for this course. If you cancel three weeks before the course starting date, you will receive a full refund minus a $30 administration fee and a $45 digital manual fee. If you cancel two weeks before the course starting date, you will receive a 50 percent refund minus the $45 manual fee. If you cancel with less than 2 weeks notice no refund will be issued.  The interpretive Guides Manual costs $45 for members, and it is sent out digitally so once it is sent we cannot refund you for that cost.

If the Interpretive Guides Association has to cancel a course due to low numbers, you will have the choice of being given a full refund or transferring your registration for another course.

Waterton Supplement Course

Add Waterton to your list of parks you are accredited in. Join us to learn about the geology, ecology, parks management and history of the Waterton area. 

When: Saturday, April 29, 2017

Time: 9:00 - 5:00 pm

Location: Canmore IGA office 203-820 Main St.

Who is this course for: Anyone who is interested in learning more about Waterton National Park and the surrounding area, and those interested in working as a guide in that park. If you already have an apprentice or professional interpreter accreditation all you have to do is take and pass the test. Test fee offered at a discounted rate of = $35 for an AI accreditation and $65 for a PI accreditation. The AI test must be taken at the end of the course and the PI test needs to be scheduled for a later date as it will take 2 - 3 hours to write.

Course Cost: $99.95 plus GST

**Additional information: If you are working in Waterton and do not have an accreditation from us you can take this course and day 2 of our regular AI course to receive a Waterton AI certification. Please contact Tracey at info@interpretiveguides for more details. The cost of the full course is $335 plus GST and includes an IGA manual and membership.
