Apprentice Interpreter Course Content
Day 1 Natural History We will cover: -The basics of Canadian Rockies Geology (sedimentation, mountain building, erosion, rock types) – An introduction to glaciers and mountain weather – An introduction to mountain ecosystems (Typical mountain habitats, species interactions and ecosystem connections)
History and Park Management We will cover: – Eras of human presence from aboriginal to park creation – Evolution of concept of park- from playground to goal of ecological integrity – Current park management issues & initiatives
Day 2 Introduction to Interpretation We will cover: – An overview of interpretation and how interpretation is different from information – The basics of effective communication – How to build a thematic interpretive program

Course Cost: $335 plus gst
The course fee includes; IGA manual (this is available digitally or paper. A digital copy will be emailed to you once we receive payment if you don’t indicate that you want a paper copy. Paper copies can be picked up at the office or sent in the mail if you want to pay shipping fees) and a membership with the association that is good for one full year from the date of purchase. If you cannot access the digital manual after it has been sent to you get in contact with us right away. This manual is essential for this course!
Test Re-Take fee: $65 for full retake or $30 per section

Cancellation & Refund Policy Please read our Cancellation & Refund Policy if you are planning to sign up for this course. If you cancel three weeks before the course starting date, you will receive a full refund minus a $30 administration fee and a $45 digital manual fee. If you cancel two weeks before the course starting date, you will receive a 50 percent refund minus the $45 manual fee. If you cancel with less than 2 weeks notice no refund will be issued. The interpretive Guides Manual costs $45 for members, and it is sent out digitally so once it is sent we cannot refund you for that cost.
If the Interpretive Guides Association has to cancel a course due to low numbers, you will have the choice of being given a full refund or transferring your registration for another course.

Times: Day 1 - 9 am - 6 pm, Day 2 - 9 am - 5 pm, Test from 6 - 7 pm You must receive 70% or more on all 5 sections of the test to become accredited
Location: GEORGETOWN INN DINING ROOM, BOW VALLEY TRAIL, CANMORE
Cost: $335 plus GST

**If you plan to work as a hiking guide you will also need to take our group management course. With both courses, you will become certified by us as an apprentice hiking guide.
