This 4-hour workshop has been designed to help people craft good quality themes, work with themes and development these themes into interpretive programs they can work with when guiding their guests.

Who is this workshop for: people who have taken an interpretation course and have had an introduction to thematic interpretation to people who have had more experience with themes and program development but want more practice and coaching.

Professional Interpreter Oral Exam (all languages)
This session is open to people who have already taken the Professional Interpreter Course but have not yet taken this exam

Cost: $65 plus gst

***All oral outlines must be submitted to the IGA's Executive Director as soon as registration is complete. 

All individuals taking this test must be a valid member of the IGA in good standing.
In order to become accredited at the PI level you must complete and pass both the written and oral exams with a minimum of 70%.
All oral exams are submitted by video (You Tube or Vimeo).

40 hour Wilderness First Aid November 2018
40 hour Wilderness First Aid November 2018

Cost: $375 plus gst

Dates: November 9-12, 2018

Times: 8 - 6 daily Location: IGA office, 203-820 Main St. Canmore

This 40 hour Wilderness First Aid course provides individuals with comprehensive first aid and CPR techniques.

It is a more appropriate and recommended level of training for individuals working as hiking guides, allowing you to respond to emergencies in isolated or wilderness settings.

The course covers material in Standard First Aid & CPR, plus advanced strategies for providing extended care for more than 24 hours. Part of the course is taught in an outdoor setting and requires greater physical activity and endurance than typical first aid training. If you do not have time to take all 4 days you can also sign up for the first two days to receive the 20 hour Wilderness and Remote First Aid certificate.

Canmore Field trips could take place in Banff National Park and you will need a PC park pass!!

Course Cost: $499 plus GST

Day 1: 9:00 am - 5:30 pm -Interpretation

Day 2: 9:00 pm - 5:00 pm -Parks Management classroom session and field trip. This day will be spent in Banff. Meet at Cave and Basin.

Day 3: 9:00 am - 1:00 pm - Interpretation 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm - History and Climate Change

Day 4 - 9 am - 6 pm - Geology and Ecology

Day 5 - 9:00 - 5:00 - Geology and Ecology Field Trip - Different Areas of Banff (a valid parks pass will be required!)

Day 6 - 9:00 pm - 1:30 pm Interpretation

Please read all sections of the IGA manual. If you do not have one you can purchase it for $45 plus GST.

This course is designed for those individuals who have experience working as guides in the Canadian Rockies. It goes much deeper into the material than the Apprentice Course.

Please note: this is only a course; in order to become accredited as a professional interpreter take the oral and written exams. In order to take both exams you must qualify with enough hours of experience and expertise. You will be emailed a copy of the PI application package when you register and pay for this course. Please read through it to find out if you qualify take the exams. Exams will take place in December, January, Feb, May, June and September each year. Exams each cost an additional $65 plus GST. Please email courses@interpretiveguides.org with your completed application package if you are interested in taking these two exams and make sure to book an exam date at that time.

Our Winter Group Management Course will train you to understand the requirements to guide and manage a group in winter conditions. By passing this course you will be certified to guide groups in snowy conditions throughout this region.

Course pre-requisites: 1. Valid first aid certificate (Minimum Wilderness First aid (40 hour) ) and 2. Hiking resume. Details for the hiking resume can be found in the GM pre-course package.
