Geological Wonders of Banff, Yoho, and Jasper workshop with Geologist Dale Leckie.

During this 4 hour workshop, Dale will use his new book "Rocks, Ridges, and Rivers: Geological Wonders of Banff, Yoho, and Jasper National Parks" to help participants understand how to use it as a learning tool to help learn and discover more about the geology of the areas we guide in.

If you want to learn more about the geology of the Canadian Rockies in a fun and interactive workshop this evening event is for you.

His book will be available to participants at a reduced rate during the course as well.

Wilderness First Aid

Wilderness First Aid - 20-hour course

Cost: $250 plus gst

Dates: January 27/28, 2018

Times: 8 - 5 daily

Location: IGA office, 203-820 Main St. Canmore

This course offers individuals with a basic level of wilderness & remote first aid, covering material in Standard First Aid & CPR, plus special material on techniques for wilderness and remote areas. This course also offers strategies for providing extended care for up to 24 hours. Part of the course is taught in an outdoor setting and requires greater physical activity and endurance than typical first aid training. The course is suitable for those individuals who work or live in remote locations or who are outdoor recreation enthusiasts

Professional Interpreter Written Exam

Date: January 30, 2018

Location: IGA office - #203 - 820 main st. Canmore

Time: 1:30- 4:30 pm

Price: $65 plus gst

Those individuals who have taken the IGA's Professional Interpreter course and have sent in their PI application package showing they have enough hours of experience and expertise are permitted to take this test.

All individuals taking this test must be a valid member of the IGA in good standing.

In order to become accredited at the PI level, you must complete and pass both the written and oral exams with a minimum of 70% (Written exam requires 70% overall and 70% per section of the test).

Group Management - In English

Dates: February 8/9, 2018

Cost: $235 plus GST

Times: 8:30 - 5:30 daily

Location: Canmore- IGA's downtown office 302-820 Main St. (1st half of day 1 is inside and then the rest of the course will be held outside on a local trail, come prepared for all weather)

Apprentice Interpreter Course - English

Date: February 6/7, 2018

Times: Day 1 - 9 am - 6 pm, Day 2 - 9 am - 5 pm, Test from 6 - 7 pm You must receive 70% or more on all 5 sections of the test to become accredited

Cost: $335 plus GST

***Once you pay in full you will receive two emails - one with the course agenda and pre-reading document and one with the course digital manual. If you would prefer a paper manual you can arrange to pick one up a the IGA office.

  • There is a good deal of reading to do prior to day 1 so make sure to pay early. This reading will be emailed to you and will help you pass this test -

French Group Management Course

Dates: February 5/6, 2018

Cost: $235 plus GST

Times: 8:30 - 5:00 daily

You must have a valid first aid certificate (at least standard 16-hour) and a hiking resume. Details can be found in the GM pre-course package that will be sent to you once you have paid your course fees.

French Apprentice Interpreter Course

Apprentice Interpreter in French

Dates: February 3/4, 2018

Location: Canmore IGA office - unit 203-820 Main St.

Cost: $335 plus GST

***A course manual will be emailed to you as well as a pre-course reading document with practice questions upon full course payment *** There is a good deal of reading to do prior to day 1 so make sure to pay early. Reading this material will help you pass this test. All participants must get 70% or higher on all sections of the test in order to become accredited.

**If you plan to work as a hiking guide you will also need to take our group management course. With both courses, you will become certified by us as an apprentice hiking guide.

Professional Interpreter - In Japanese

Date: April 11 - 16, 2018 (one day break on April 14th)

Location: Banff (classroom sessions in Banff (room TBA), field trips components conducted in various areas throughout Banff National Park)

Cost: $499 plus GST

If you would like a copy of the IGA English manual you can purchase one for $45 plus gst. They are available digitally or as a paper copy. If you would like to pick one up from the IGA office please email us to arrange a time to come by.

This course is designed for those individuals who have experience working as guides in the Canadian Rockies. It goes much deeper into the material than the Apprentice Course. Please note: this is only a course; in order to become accredited as a professional interpreter you must apply to take the oral and written exams. Exams each cost an additional $65 plus GST and will be set up after the course based on the request. Please email info@interpretiveguides.org if you are interested in taking these two exams. All individuals wishing to take these two tests and become accredited must fill in the PI application package and submit it to the email address above with all documentation showing you have the hours of work and/or education required to become accredited at this level. Exam Requirements:

1. An oral exam outline (outline details will be emailed to you).

2. PI application package.

3. IGA membership in good standing.

4. Have attended the PI course.

All oral exams are to be submitted by video (YouTube or Vimeo).

Outdoor Council of Canada (OCC) Certification

Outdoor Council of Canada (OCC) Certificate

This is an add on certification for those taking our Group Management course.

By paying this fee, completing the homework and passing the test you can complete the Group Management course with two certifications. You will become a certified OCC Field Leader and a hiking guide with the Interpretive Guides Association.
